Student Spotlight – Hailey Lee

I am a graduate student in the lab of Caius Radu. My research interests are in improving understanding of the intersection between the host immune system and tumor biology and utilizing new insights to develop immunotherapeutic strategies for cancers that are refractory to current standard-of-care.
Exciting research project or any highlights in your lab
I have always been interested in the generation and enhancement of anti-tumor T cell responses. For my project, I have been involved in the development and characterization of new immunostimulatory molecules that we are applying to T cell-directed immunization strategies.
How did you decide on your focus of research?
My initial foray into scientific research when I was an undergraduate student exposed me to the concept of cancer immunotherapy, and I knew that I wanted to continue studying tumor immunology for my doctoral studies. I chose my current lab to not only develop my knowledge of immunobiology but also conduct research with the goal of translational impact in mind.
What brought you to UCLA?
Growing up in the LA county area with a UCLA alum as a parent, I always knew that UCLA would be one of my top schools to consider attending, and I did eventually choose to do my undergraduate studies here. This decision significantly shaped my life trajectory because the academic environment at UCLA introduced me to exciting biomedical research. I am grateful to remain at UCLA to pursue my Ph.D., as I have had opportunities to expand my research experience, foster relationships with interesting faculty and fellow scientists, and mentor exceptional undergraduate student researchers. Also, having lived on the Westside for some time now, I am definitely spoiled for choice for restaurants and places to go.
Do you have a personal motto?
Just put it in supplementary. Also, smooth seas don’t make skilled sailors.
Do you have any hobbies outside of the lab?
I enjoy collecting rare houseplants and testing out different single origin coffee beans. I will also start knitting projects at random and occasionally attempt to improve my drawing/painting/watercolor skills. I usually spend my weekends looking for elusive restaurant reservations and/or shopping.
